Trading with the Enemy

I’ve seen some people on other sites discuss a trade with the Patriots so they could select A.J. Green and we can stockpile picks.  I figured I would crunch the numbers for those interested, based on the Trade Value Chart.

Bills

3rd overall: 2,200

Patriots

17th overall: 950

28th overall:  660

33rd overall:  580

= 2,190

This would be a dream scenario for the Bills.  The value would be almost perfect and the ability to select three players in the top 33 would be the best way to lay the foundation for this team.  However, I’m 99.9% sure that the Patriots would not be willing to part with those three picks.

The Pats are a team that likes saving picks for a rainy day, so to speak.  They wait until they are on the clock and if they don’t like anyone enough to select with that pick, they trade down or try to swap the pick for picks the following year.  I envision that 33rd overall pick turning into a mid 2nd rounder in 2011 and a 1st in 2012.  I can see the argument that they were 14-2 this season and don’t need very many things.  They could use A.J. Green or Mark Ingram.  I don’t think anyone before the Dolphins at 15 need a RB, and Ingram could be had by moving up a few slots from their post at 17 rather than trade up to #3.  At any rate, I highly doubt that Bill Belichick would even consider this deal, but if he did, I would be excited.  It would be fair for both teams, it’s just doesn’t follow his track record.
