Bills Extend "Lights Out"

Bills LB Shawne Merriman hinted on Friday that he had some “exciting news” for Bills fans.  That news turned out to be the announcement of a contract extension that will keep Shawne in Buffalo for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

While I haven’t found the official terms yet, the deal guarantees Merriman $2.5 million in ’11 and has incentives that can increase his salary to a max of $9.25 million per year.  The former San Diego Charger lasted only one practice with the Bills after we claimed him off waivers this past season.  If he can come back healthy, it would be a gift for Buffalo.

Not a huge fan of this deal. It makes more sense than Kelsay, and I assume it is a reasonable incentive-laden deal, but I wouldn’t have resigned him. Those 10 minutes of practice he participated in must have been awesome.

Haha I heard that he racked up 7 sacks, 2 FF, a pass break up, and saved 4 little kids from a burning building in those ten minutes!

In all seriousness, how miffed must Donte Whitner be right now? He can be a good sport and say congrats, but this guy doesn’t play a down for the team and they reward with a contract offer that is a much higher salary than they’re offering Donte. I realize there isn’t as much risk in a 2 year deal as opposed to a 5-6 like Donte wants, but that’s still pretty insulting for a guy that’s given his heart to the team since ’06.
