Bills Viewed As Physical Yet Elementary

ESPN’s AFC East Blogger , Tim Graham,  recently made his rounds to all the AFC East teams training camps.  Here is his first impression of the Bills after leaving St. John Fisher College.

Most elementary: Bills. The combination of no playoffs for a decade, a new general manager, a new coaching staff and a new 3-4 defense mean more teaching moments at St. John Fisher than at any other camp I attended. A lot of work on fundamentals.

Most physical: Bills. Head coach Chan Gailey went with pads from the first air horn, a stark contrast from predecessor Dick Jauron. I could have picked the Patriots here because I saw their joint practices with the Saints and witnessed a lot of lively action, but over the course of camp, the Bills have done more hitting than anybody.

I must say, he hit the team head on.  Who could argue  these two opinions after the Bills first preseason game?   There were a few great hits (most from SS Whitner), but also a ton of errors that CANNOT continue if this franchise wants to turn their luck around.   And by errors I don’t just mean the turnovers, but also ‘stupid’ penalties that could prolong an opponents drive or often kill a drive of their own.

But thank god it’s only preseason, where mistakes can be made and hopefully fixed in time for the regular season.  Coach Gailey has a lot of work ahead of him, but let’s keep the faith until the real season starts.
