Super Bowl Monday

Here are some headlines and notes for Super Bowl Monday:

The recycling of coaches in professional sports boggles my mind.  But then again, a coach can win in one city, and be a goat in the next.  It is refreshing to think that the Super Bowl XLIII coaches are sophomores – poised to make the leap to solid veterans by adding a Super Bowl to their resumes.  It leaves me scratching my head to think that Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Ken Whisenhut (Arizona Cardinals) were given a chance by teams two years ago, and developed winning franchises in a short period of time.  Ok, Tomlin was handed a decent franchise, but made it his own very quickly.  What makes me scratch my head is why must we in Buffalo suffer a fourth (or more) year with perennial loser Dick Jauron?

Is Kurt Warner ready for the Hall of Fame?  If you take this season away from Warner, he still has two NFL MVP awards, a Super Bowl MVP, and statistics that can rival other great quarterbacks.  He is now only the second quarterback in the history of the Super Bowl to start the game for different teams (Craig Morton is the other, starting for Dallas (Super Bowl V) and Denver  (Super Bowl XII)).  If  Warner wins on Sunday, he will become the first quarterback to win two Super Bowls as the starter for different teams.

Home field disadvantage?  The Cardinals have not been good long enough to have a large following outside of the Arizona market.  Yet they boast “home field advantage” for the Super Bowl.  When the crowd gets going this Sunday however, it is going to seem like the Steelers are the home team, even though they will be wearing white – as the Steelers boast a larger out of market fan base; as well as controlling the ticket purchasing for the game.  It looks like the Terrible Towels will make a strong Super Bowl appearance as well.
