Looking back, it must sting that the Bills couldn’t win in four tries through Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XXVII, and XXVIII.
According to Tim Graham from ESPN Sports, the sting has faded some for former Bills coach Marv Levy:
“The losses of the Super Bowls hurt tremendously for a time, but you can’t continue to just lie there and whimper,” Levy said Wednesday on a conference call. “You have to recognize the good. There’s one way never to lose a Super Bowl, and that’s don’t go to it.”
Levy has been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Along side him from the Bills AFC Dynasty are QB Jim Kelley, RB Thurman Thomas, WR James Lofton, and will soon be joined by DE Bruce Smith, owner Ralph Wilson, and eventually WR Andre Reed.
The question remains, how many more from that gleeful time in Bills history would have made it – if the Bills had one at least one, if not more Super Bowl? Granted looking back their best chance was in Super Bowl XXV, where they lost to the Giants – but winning the first one may have changed the way they approached the next three.
As modern Bills fans hope the team can regain even a hint of the glory of the Levy teams, we can stand and cheer as our beloved Bills take their rightful place in the hallowed halls of Canton, Ohio.
