Arena Football League to cancel ‘09 season

Times are rough for sports leagues.  The NHL in a labor dispute with their players union caused the first cancellation of an entire professional sports league.  This came several years after a shortened season because of the same reason.  Danger meters point to the NHL having the same problem the next time the CBA comes to the table.

The Arena Football League has recently announced, despite earlier rebuttals on the issue, that pending a change in status, they were going to cancel the 2009 season.  Seeing this “fringe” league struggle in these economic times is disheartening, especially as the top leagues are cutting jobs and freezing new hires.  If more of the “fringe” sports or smaller leagues start to go under, we could possibly see the big leagues start to struggle as well.
