The Bills coming back like its 1990

Thanks to the relative parity of the league another team’s misfortune is another team’s opportunity. Tom Brady’s season-ending injury in Week 1 jarred the NFL front office, the experts’ predictions, and Boston area strong hold on the top contenders in all the major sports. The injury also made the long betrothed AFC East title up for grabs again.

All of the sudden Buffalo Bills tickets for the entire season carried new implications. Instead of just competing for a wild card spot in the playoffs, the season at Ralph Wilson Stadium became a fight for a division title and deep playoff aspirations.

Now fans think that the team could conceivably make a run at the Super Bowl. The shocking thing is that the team could. The quarterback position has finally been settled. J.P. Losman’s potential had gone from compelling to a distraction as he consistently let Buffalo down. Now Trent Edwards mans the position behind the center without the worry of fans beckoning for Losman to be given another chance.

Edwards might not be going to the Pro Bowl, but he will be leading the offense with talented receivers Lee Evans and Josh Reed realizing that they no longer have an excuse to be underproductive. The Bills offense is deceptively balanced though. Marshawn Lynch is solid running back that helps move the chains down field. While everybody was contemplating the Favre trade, the Pennington signing, and the Cassel situation, the Bills were banking on the pieces they had collected to do the job.

That looks like a good investment so far. The team could not be in serious contention without a defense to compliment the solid offense. Marcus Stroud and Aaron Schobel put pressure on the pocket and disrupt the run. The secondary can protect the team against long plays with Donte Whitner and Terrence McGee.

The Buffalo Bills are a team that most football fans can not honestly talk about. The names are familiar, but still a mystery and most teams over the NFL season schedule will find it just as difficult to pinpoint a weakness as they try and beat the Bills.
