Safety Scott Stays With Bills

Safety Bryan Scott resigned with the Buffalo Bills today after his success during the 2007-2008 season. Scott gives the Bills depth at the safety position. He also gives them a back-up with some starting experience, two games.

“I was hoping I was back this year,” said Scott. “I’ve made some lifelong friendships in a really short amount of time. I really like this organization and the coaches.”

Scott (6′1″, 219) was brought back as the Bills have been looking to add safety depth to the roster. The six-year veteran originally signed with Buffalo last September after Ko Simpson was lost for the season in the opener against Denver with a broken ankle.

As the season wore on last year defensive coordinator Perry Fewell came up with different ways to use Scott within his scheme making use of a three safety package on obvious run downs.

That package was at its most effective in week 12 at Jacksonville when Scott and Buffalo’s defense held Maurice Jones-Drew to 10 yards on 10 carries including Scott’s third down tackle for loss on a 3rd-and-1 play in Buffalo red zone.

“Looking back at last year I was glad I was able to come in and just help this team in any way I possibly could,” said Scott.

Whether Fewell would entertain utilizing Scott more extensively remain to be seen. Former free agent safety Marlon McCree visited Buffalo earlier this month under the assumption that if he signed with the Bills (he ultimately signed with Denver) that he would play strong safety moving Donte Whitner to free safety.

Scott has the size to play strong safety, but with all the changes in the lineup due to injury and the fact that Scott did not go through training camp with the club likely made a more prominent role last year unrealistic. It may be a consideration now with Scott on board for a full offseason.

With Scott back in the fold, Buffalo now has six safeties on the roster as he joins Jon Corto, Ko Simpson, John Wendling, Donte Whitner and George Wilson.
