Bills hurt by Patriots
The frustrating beginning to the Buffalo Bills season continued as they dropped a 38-7 decision to New England Patriots. The game didn’t start off very good for the Bills as starting quarterback J.P. Losman was injured on the very first play from scrimmage. It was an innocent looking screen pass to Marshawn Lynch for four yards but Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork delivered an elbow to the left knee of Losman. Losman remained in the game for just two more plays before being replaced by rookie Trent Edwards.
Edwards came into the game and led Buffalo to a touchdown on his very first drive. It was an 80 yard touchdown drive and Edwards was 4-for-5 with 55 yards. The drive culminated with a touchdown run by a determined Marshawn Lynch. After that drive it felt like the Bills might have something going and an upset wasn’t out of the question. Unfortunately those thoughts quickly subsided.
After Buffalo went ahead 7-3 the Bills started playing more like the Bills, the Patriots started playing more like the Patriots and Trent Edwards started playing more like, uhh well… a rookie. Tom Brady started to pick apart the Bills young secondary and the three headed running attack of Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk started to eat up large chunks of yards on the Bills defense.
The loss of J.P. Losman wasn’t the only significant injury suffered by the Bills, rookie middle linebacker Paul Posluzsny suffered a broken forearm and is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow. It is not known how long Posluzsny will be out of the lineup but cornerback Jason Webster was placed on injured reserve after suffering a similar injury in the week one loss to Denver. Head coach Dick Jauron labeled the injury to Losman as a Grade one knee strain and suggested he could be out a couple of weeks.
The Bills will look to rebound from three consecutive losses when they host the visiting New York Jets. The Jets improved to 1-2 beating Miami 31-28. Kickoff is 1pm at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
