Defensive injuries mount

When the season began we already knew that the Bills defense was young and inexperienced but we had no idea how young and inexperienced they really were. Keith Ellison went down in the preseason thrusting Coy Wire into a starting role in his first full season as a linebacker. This week the Bills will be without Ellison and Wire and also will play most if not all of the season without Ko Simpson (broken ankle) and Jason Webster (broken forearm). It appears that Ashton Youboty will be in the starting lineup to replace Webster and Jim Leonhard will start in place of Simpson.

It will be interesting to see how Youboty does in the starting lineup. He was a guy who was highly regarded coming out of Ohio State and never really emerged last season. It took until the fourth and final preseason game before he played well this year and now he will be starting in week two. If you look back just one season the exact same thing happened with Ko Simpson becoming a starter in week two.

In other Bills news the team announced that they released reserve defensive end Eric Powell today. The Bills also signed two tight ends yesterday, signing Michael Gaines who had reached an injury settlement with the Carolina Panthers and they also re-signed Matt Murphy.
