It was a wet and rainy day in Orchard Park, New York the site of the Buffalo Bills home opener against the Denver Broncos. The Bills appeared ready to pull off the upset until Jason Elam sailed a 43 yard field goal through the uprights on the games final play. The Bills received the first big play of the day when Roscoe Parrish returned a Tom Sauerbrun punt 74 yards for a touchdown. The explosive Parrish put the home crowd into a frenzy and some fans were ready to declare the Bills Super Bowl champs based on one play. The chants of “I’ve got a feeling…Buffalo is going to the Super Bowl” were a little premature because as those same fans would later find out.
The Broncos added two first half field goals to draw within 7-6 at the break. On the opening kickoff of the second half Kevin Everett was injured severely, in what was probably the most scary thing I’ve ever seen happen on a football field. Everett was taken off the field in an ambulance after having been immobilized on a stretcher. The Bills appeared to gather some steam in the third quarter as Marshawn Lynch scored his first career touchdown on a 23 yard run that Buffalo ahead 14-6. The Broncos struck right back as Cutler hit Brandon Marshall for a five yard touchdown pass on a fade route to the sidelines.
The Bills had the ball with three minutes remaining and a two point lead but failed to get a first down. After two consecutive run plays the Bills faced a third and five and decided to air it out. Lee Evans had beat his man and was wide open but the ball was slightly overthrown forcing the Bills to punt. The Broncos drove down the field with relative ease on the final drive and somehow managed to get a field goal off to win the game with no time left.
In addition to the injury to Everett the Bills managed to three other significant injuries. Ko Simpson suffered a broken ankle and will be out indefinitely, Coy Wire suffered a sprained knee and Jason Webster has a broken forearm. The Bills defense will be very thin as they prepare for their next game on Sunday September 16 at 1:00 p.m. against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The latest report on Everett is that he had surgery for a cervical spine injury and they would know more details in 12 to 24 hours.
