There are five days until the Buffalo Bills take on the Denver Broncos to open the 2007 season and yet there are a lot of questions to be answered. The question we’ll tackle today is: how will J.P. Losman do this season?
J.P. Losman seemed to come into his own in the second half of 2006 after a couple of tumultuous years in Buffalo that included a broken leg and being named starter without a competition only to be replaced mid-season by Kelly Holcomb. Losman struggled early in last season and it appeared that maybe the Bills would have to look in another direction for a quarterback but a second half revival not only changed that but had some experts comparing him to John Elway. If the preseason is any indication as to how Losman will play this year we should cancel our plans to see him inducted in Canton.
The Bills spent some money this off-season to bolster the offensive line in order to allow Losman to develop further and if he does the future looks bright for the Bills. Losman spent the second half of last season picking apart defenses along with Lee Evans. The combination of Evans and Losman was lethal and brought back memories of the Jim Kelly/Andre Reed combination. If these two players play well the Buffalo Bills will be in good shape offensively.
The most impressive part of Losman’s performance last season was the fact that Buffalo had no running game to speak of. Willis McGahee struggled mightily last season and didn’t even go over 1000 yards on the season. This season I would expect that the two headed monster of Marshawn Lynch and Anthony Thomas will be able to pick up their fair share of the yards and allow Losman to further confuse defenses. I won’t be making room for Losman’s bust in Canton just yet but I anticipate a strong season from the entire offensive unit but that starts and ends with J.P.
