Wallace a Bill?

On Tuesday night WGR55 reported that the Buffalo Bills were close to signing free agent defensive end Al Wallace. Wallace will bring depth to a position that is desperately in need of some depth. The Bills anticipate Ryan Denney will miss significant time with a broken foot that required surgery. Denney could possibly miss the entire season but that decision has not been made yet. The Bills will also be without the services of Anthony Hargrove who is suspended for the first four games for a violation of the leagues substance abuse policy. The Bills have not yet decided whether or not to cut Hargrove.

Wallace is a big guy who is known for being a run stopper more than a pass rusher although he did have three sacks last season with the Carolina Panthers. At six foot five inches, Wallace is a big guy who should be able to clog up some holes in spot duty. Wallace is a seven year veteran who played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers, he played five seasons with the Panthers. Wallace has played in 96 NFL games but has only started six.

Wallace is not being brought in to supplant the current starters, this would simply be a depth move that was made necessary by the lack of depth. The Bills coaching staff likes to rotate there players in and out and they did not have much depth behind Aaron Schobel and Chris Kelsay with the absence of Ryan Denney and Anthony Hargrove. The sudden turn of events over the past week and a half has not been good for the Bills, defensive end was a position the Bills thought was a strength before losing two guys they were counting on.

Wallace is not the only free agent defensive end available right now but he must have impressed the Bills brass enough to try to get him signed. If you are interested in some of the other guys available than check out this post by Brian G at Buffalo Rumblings from earlier in the week. I realize that some of the other guys available have bigger names but I think that maybe Wallace will be the best fit to fill in for Schobel and Kelsay.

Update: Wallace signed as per WGR55
